Brilliant Books

This practical half-day training will introduce some wonderful ideas to enable you to create homemade books for all ages. You will have the opportunity to:

• Discover how recycled and found materials can be used inventively to make simple, yet effective homemade books. Yours to keep, so ideas can be shared and developed further;
• Reflect on the links to literacy and the arts, and how a special book, made either for the whole class or for an individual child, can support learning and foster a love of books and reading;
• Discuss how to use homemade books to document children’s progress, and build positive relationships between families and setting.

All materials will be provided - participants may wish to bring their own scissors, photographs, paper or fabric. 

Afternoon session 12.30 - 4.30pm:
Feelings & Behaviour - a Creative Approach

‘Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured’

This statement is one of the core principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage, but how can we translate it into practice? This half day training will look at practical ways to foster children’s personal, social and emotional development, with a particular focus on supporting positive behaviour.

The session will include:

• Identifying everyday behaviour concerns; why they might be happening and creative ways to respond;
• Reflection on some of the key experiences that help to build resilience and confident and capable learners;
• Helpful ‘take-away’ strategies: eg how to support children who bite; how to help children resolve conflicts and develop language to express their feelings appropriately.

As well as a visual presentation and short film, participants will take part in paired and small group discussions in a friendly, supportive atmosphere.


Trainer(s): Anni McTavish

Specialising in the arts and creativity, Anni McTavish has worked on a variety of projects in the UK and internationally and is an Associate of Early Education. Originally trained as a fine bookbinder working for Circle Press and the BBC Music Library, Anni then worked as a volunteer artist educator at a cooperative pre-school, as head of centre and then running training for the London Borough of Camden. With a background in the arts, early education and humanistic psychotherapy, her approach is to inspire, inform and help practitioners identify strengths as well as areas to develop. She has written numerous articles and books Including ‘Playing and Exploring - Learning and Teaching in the Early Years’.
